The player controls a space ship as it navigates the terrain, flying either to the left or right. A joystick controls the ship's elevation, and five buttons control its horizontal direction and weapons. The object is to destroy alien invaders, while protecting astronauts on the landscape from abduction.
Humans that are successfully abducted return as mutants that attack the ship. Defeating the aliens allows the player to progress to the next level. Failing to protect the astronauts, however, causes the planet to explode and the level to become populated with mutants. Surviving the waves of mutants results in the restoration of the planet. Players are allotted three chances lives to progress through the game and are able to earn more by reaching certain scoring benchmarks.
A life is lost if the ship comes into contact with an enemy or its projectiles. After exhausting all lives, the game ends. You can press F2 on your keyboard although many browsers will not understand you pressing F2 or try to do other actions , or you can use the virtual keyboard next to the screen to press the "ADVANCE" button. At this point, the game will be in attract mode and playable. Next, the controls to Defender were unusually difficult for the time, and continue to be involved. Just like back in the day Highlight a function press return key then choose your different key. When finished scroll to the bottom of the menu that says 'return to previous menu' press Return then in that menu scroll down to 'return to machine' press Return That's it!

I remember spending lots of quarters on this game when it first came out in the arcades and it quickly became a favorite of mine. Of course once it's sequel "Stargate" was released my quarters all went to that game.
It's so nice now having emulators and this wonderful internet arcade, because now I can relive all of those great gaming memories without the quarters. Once you get used to the keyboard controls on this one, it's every bit as fun as the arcade original and every bit as challenging and addicting. Defender is Atari's excellent PC port of Williams' arcade hit - one of the most successful of all time designed by legendary Eugene Jarvis. Your mission, as captain of the "Defender" ship, is to protect the humanoids stranded on the planet from their alien abductors. The scanner will help you determine a strategy to shoot down the alien ships before they reach the humanoids.
If you destroy the aliens after they have captured their prey, you must return the humanoids to the safety of the planet or they will fall to their death. If an alien carries its victim out of your range, the humanoid will mutate, join the alien force, and take to assault with deadly vengeance. Like the arcade version, the beauty of Defender PC is that challenge becomes ever more intense the more you play.
You'll come across new, tougher enemies such as bombers, mines, and the cosmic "Baiter. Defender is truly one of the timeless classics that is no less fun no matter how many times you have played it.
